Professor Simon Carroll

Professor Simon Carroll is Director of
the Western Australian Biomedical Research
Institute (WABRI) in Perth and a Professor
of Biomedical Research at Curtin University
of Technology.
Professor Carroll is the Chairman of AusBiotech
Ltd, the Australian Biotechnology Industry
Association. He has been on the Board of
Directors since its inception in 2001 and
has also served as Chairman of the WA branch
of AusBiotech (2001-2003).
Professor Carroll serves on a number of committees including a Working Group for the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council. He is also on the Board of Advisors for the Chemistry Centre (WA) and a Director of the biotechnology company, Alzhyme Limited.
During the last ten years, Professor Carroll has contributed to science, industry and education in many ways including through:
- The WA Premier's Science Council Working Group for Medical Research;
- The Medical & Health Research Infrastructure Council of WA;
- The Lotteries WA Medical Research Committee and Equipment Facility Committee;
- Foundation Capital, a venture capital fund;
- Boards of Management of Cooperative Research Centres (CRC for Diagnostic Technologies, CRC for Cardiac Technologies),commercialisation committees (CRC for Cellular Growth Factors, CRC for Eye Research and Technology)
- Boards of Directors of Biomolecular Research Institute Ltd, Elastomedic Pty Ltd, CRCN Pty Ltd, Poly U Pty Ltd
Prior to returning to Perth in January 2001, Dr Carroll was a senior commercial adviser to CSIRO based in their Melbourne corporate office. His previous professional appointments with CSIRO involved commercial development activities in the area of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and health research and the Co-ordinator of CSIRO's Pharmaceutical and Human Health Sector Research.
Prior to joining CSIRO, Dr Carroll had undertaken post-doctoral studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, worked at the prestigious Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research in Melbourne before joining the pharmaceutical development company, AMRAD in 1991.
Dr Carroll is an inventor of a patent for genetic transfer that has been granted in the US, Australia and several other territories.
During 1982, Dr Carroll started a specialty cheese manufacturing company in Margaret River (the Margaret River Cheese Company) where he developed the manufacturing processes, designed the factory layout and equipment and was the inaugural Chairman of the Board of Directors.
