Project Title:

Investigating novel drug resistance mechanisms in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia

Project Description:

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common childhood cancer. Advances in chemotherapy treatments over the last 20 years have resulted in 80% of patients being cured. However the remaining 20% of patients suffer relapses, related to drug resistance, and have a very poor prognosis. Gene expression and drug resistance profiles of a panel of 22 ALL cell lines were collected and used to identify genes correlated with drug resistance. Top-ranked genes are being functionally investigated to determine their specific roles in drug resistance. The identification of novel resistance mechanisms will be used to improve patient survival by detecting patients at diagnosis who are at risk of relapsing and would benefit from treatment with different chemotherapy drugs.
