The control of infectious diseases
has been largely due to the introduction of antibiotics
to treat bacterial infections. However, bacteria
have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics
to the point where we have "super bugs"
which are resistant to most of the currently available
antibiotics.
This research is aimed at controlling the spread
of antibiotic resistance genes and antibiotic
resistant organisms as well as understanding why
some strains spread more readily and are more
virulent. By understanding how resistance is spread
and why some organisms are more successful than
others intervention measures can be developed
for their control.
The research is also developing more efficient
ways of identify problem organisms and monitor
their spread and provides information to hospitals
and medical personnel which aids them in controlling
the spread of dangerous organisms.
This is a joint venture between Royal Perth Hospital
and Curtin University of Technology.
